Martial Applications of Short Form

It is essential for anyone who plans to teach tai chi to know where the postures came from and how to demonstrate the application. It is very helpful to know what the original purpose of a posture was to be able to perform it correctly. When you know the meaning of a posture, you will practice the postures with the appropriate energies. The applications for many of the 24 short form postures will be discussed and practiced.

Push Hands Introduction

Push Hands practice will teach the student how to use the postures from the bare hand forms to gain a deeper understanding. Partner exercises to increase sensitivity and to refine technique are learned and practiced.


Push Hands practice teaches us to better understand the form. Once students are proficient at form practice the next level is to learn how to use the eight energies. There are many fun partner exercises to better understand not only the energy within our bodies but to learn to be aware and sensitive to energy around us. Several dance like drills will be introduced and practiced. This course is valuable for anyone and particularly those on the instructor track and a really essential for anyone planning to learn the famous Yang matching set

Chin Na for Self Defense or for Taijiquan Applications

This course is sometimes offered as a practical self defense method and sometimes to better understand the chin na as a martial strategy for the martial applications of Taijiquan.

Chin Na (seize and control) is one of the four martial strategies that are  practiced in every Chinese martial art including Taijiquan. Learning to use leverage instead of strength to escape from an adversary is empowering. Controlling someone’s posture without strength is also empowering and a good skill to have. Several techniques and escapes will be discussed and practiced.

Wooden Ball

Wooden ball qigong has been practiced since ancient times to improve Taijiquan skills. Ball training is an essential practice that organizes your body to perform Taijiquan efficiently. Students on either the health or martial track benefit from ball practice.

Paul Mahoney and Austin Murray we teach many ball patterns, the ball form, as well as some ball qigong.

Taiji Saber

After learning the wooden ball the next practice is Taiji saber. There are many benefits gained from this practice including extending you qi (life force).  Students on either the health or the martial track benefit from this practice.

Taiji Sword

It is required to be proficient at saber before learning the higher level skill of sword.


We offer several different qigong practices including both healing and martial qigong.
